Recently, the 2020 China agriculture outlook conference was held in Beijing and released the China agriculture outlook report (2020-2029). The report is informative and influential. The report forecasts an average annual growth of 5.9% in fruit exports. This conclusion may need to be considered.

According to customs statistics, in 2009, China's fruit export volume was 5.25 million tons. Since then, it has been fluctuating up and down 5 million tons, but it never exceeded 5.25 million tons. In 2019, it was 4.92 million tons. During the 10-year period, there was not only no increase, but also a decrease of 6%. So, in the next 10 years, it's hard to imagine any special situation that will increase China's fruit export by 5.9% every year.

The outlook report also forecasts that fruit imports will increase by 9.4% annually, which should be roughly in line with the actual trend. From 2009 to 2019, China's fruit import increased from 2.31 million tons to 7.29 million tons, with an average annual growth rate of more than 12%. China has become a net importer from a traditional net exporter of fruits.

Fruit statistics in China are divided into two categories: garden fruit (including citrus, apple, pear, grape, jujube, banana, etc.) and melon fruit (including watermelon, melon, strawberry, etc.). In 2018, the output of garden fruit was 175 million 650 thousand tons, and that of fruits and melons was 81 million 230 thousand tons.

Since the reform and opening up, the development of fruit industry is unique. Fruit is the agricultural product with the earliest market opening and the highest degree of market liberalization. It is also the agricultural product that hardly enjoys any special support policies of any country. At the same time, it is the agricultural product with the largest increase in production. From 1978 to 2018, the output of garden fruit in China increased by more than 25 times. The statistics of fruits and melons began in 1996 and increased by 1.3 times in 2018.

On the one hand, domestic production has increased greatly; on the other hand, the quantity of imports has also increased greatly. This shows an important fact: China's fruit consumption demand has been greatly increased. The latest survey by the national statistical department also confirms this: from 2013 to 2018, the per capita consumption of fresh fruits and fruits in China increased from 37.8kg to 47.4kg, with an annual growth rate of more than 4%.

China's fruit production, not only in terms of quantity and quality, but also in terms of variety structure and regional structure, has undergone significant changes.

In terms of garden fruit production, the largest production is now citrus, 41.83 million tons in 2018, 107 times more than in 1978, accounting for 24% of garden fruit. From the perspective of production area, Guangxi is the most eye-catching and rapid expansion: 10 years ago, it was only 2.65 million tons, comparable with other major production provinces, but now it is 8.36 million tons, far more than all other provinces. Other major production provinces are Hunan, Hubei, Guangdong, Sichuan and Jiangxi, with output of 5-4 million tons respectively.

Apple output, 39.23 million tons in 2018, accounting for 22% of garden fruit production, ranking second, while in 1978, it was 35%, ranking first. From the perspective of production area, Shaanxi ranks first with 10.09 million tons. The development of apple in Shaanxi is similar to that of Citrus in Guangxi: from 1978 to 2018, it increased 101 times; the proportion of apple in China increased from 4% to 26%. Shandong Province, the traditional first apple Province, fell to the second place with 9.52 million tons, accounting for 37% of the total in 1978 and 24% of the total. Later: 4.03 million tons in Henan and 3.77 million tons in Shanxi.

The output of pears was 16.08 million tons in 2018, accounting for 9% of garden fruits, compared with 23% in 1978. Pear production growth, the lowest of all fruits, increased only 10 times in 40 years. Pear's status has been greatly reduced, mainly because the quality improvement is not obvious enough, and it has always been a low-end product in fruit. Pear production area is wide, Hebei is the most important production area, 3.3 million tons, accounting for 21% of the country. The other major production provinces are Liaoning, Henan, Anhui, Xinjiang, Shandong, Shaanxi and so on, with output of 1.3-1 million respectively.

Grape production, 13.67 million tons in 2018, accounting for 8% of garden fruit. The yield increase of grape is the largest among fruits, which has increased by more than 130 times in 40 years. Xinjiang is a leading grape producing area, with 2.93 million tons in 2018, accounting for more than 21% of the national production. The output of Hebei, Shandong and Yunnan provinces are similar, all of which are over 1 million tons. Among them, Yunnan has the fastest development speed, from 140000 tons to 1.01 million tons in the past 10 years.
